There are also two buttons that you can program to whatever shortcuts work best for you. If you don't want Roku listening, there's a slider button on the side. So while lounging on the couch, just say “Hey Roku, play You on Netflix.” You can even ask where a lost remote is to activate a beep. Others have a mic button you can press and hold for speech, but this has a hands-free option. The most obvious difference is the new voice remote. Like the other sticks, it plugs directly into your TV's HDMI port, and another cable plugs into a USB port for power, or into the wall. This 4K Plus version allows you to stream in Dolby Vision, and is 30 percent faster with a longer-range wireless receiver (for what it's worth, I've never found any Rokus to be slow). If you can spend around $70, Roku's Streaming Sticks are the ones we recommend most. Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day. This includes unlimited access to and our print magazine (if you'd like). Special offer for Gear readers: Get a 1-year subscription to WIRED for $5 ($25 off). Updated April 2023: Roku's lineup is the same, but we've updated prices and links throughout. We've broken down the features on the ones we think you'll actually want to own, starting with the most basic model. If you’re like us, you want the best Roku for the least amount of money. Rokus tend to have similar names and look nearly identical, with small changes happening every year or so, and it can be difficult to suss out the differences. There are five Roku streaming devices available (not including TVs and soundbars), and you'll find a ton of older models on Amazon and other sellers. However, figuring out which one to buy is not so easy. Their displays aren't fancy, but they offer just what someone needs: quick, direct access to their favorite streaming services. They're super easy to use and offer a wide array of streaming channels. Rokus continue to remain our favorite TV streaming devices.

It’s not the frontier, it is the frontline of American defense.”Īt the time of the crash, international relations were in a period of rapid change and mounting tension. Ringsmuth told GlacierHub, “these oceans are shrinking because of aviation, and all of a sudden Alaska is on the frontline. Planes departing from Alaska could now exert greater influence over affairs in the Pacific and Eastern Asia. Katherine Ringsmuth, professor of history at the University of Alaska Anchorage, explained that as lengthy flights became viable, Alaska’s global positioning catapulted it into the political spotlight. However, the then-territory (Alaska was granted statehood in 1959) emerged as a strategic asset even earlier, with the rise of aviation during the Second World War. This proximity is precisely why Alaska became central to the United States’ military plan during the Cold War. “We sent almost 8000 airplanes through Alaska to the Soviet Union,” he told GlacierHub, which “was a big part of the alliance between the two countries.” This allied relationship was maintained, in part, on the basis of geographical closeness the Bering Strait, running between the continents of North America and Asia, is only 53 miles wide at its narrowest point. David Ramseur, author of Melting the Ice Curtain, explained that these positive wartime relations can be understood by the inclusion of the Soviet Union in the Lend-Lease Act. During World War II, however, the United States and the Soviet Union had been allies, even cooperating in the Arctic. Photo: Randy WickĪt the time of the crash, the Cold War was still ramping up and the United States’ project of Arctic militarization had yet to reach its zenith. If not recovered in time, the stories held in the scattered remains will fall to the bottom of the lake, from which retrieval is unlikely.Īs Colony Glacier melts, wreckage from the crash will ultimately sink to the bottom of Lake George, pictured here. With each year of warming - and melting - the wreckage inches closer to Lake George, into which the glacier feeds. As climate change accelerates the retreat of Colony Glacier, however, the window for collecting remains and artifacts shrinks. All but nine service members aboard the flight have thus far been identified. Since then, military personnel have conducted annual searches with the ultimate goal of returning remains to surviving family members. ![]() Efforts to recover remains only began in 2012, when a military training mission in the region noticed a lone yellow life raft atop the ice. ![]() Over time, the wreckage tumbled in slow motion down the mountain, eventually freezing within the nearby Colony Glacier. In addition to eight feet of fresh snow covering the wreckage, the impact of the crash is thought to have triggered an avalanche that further entombed the debris. ![]() The plane was assessed to have flown into Mount Gannett at full speed, making impact at an elevation of 8,000 feet. Six days passed before the weather permitted a search team to survey the site of the crash. Less than 60 miles from its destination, the plane crashed into the side of Mount Gannett and left no survivors. However, the flight was equipped only with a radio beacon receiver, barometric altimeter to gauge altitude, and a stopwatch as a means to find the runway. Under instrument flight conditions, characterized by poor weather, pilots must navigate without outside visual references. According to Robert Orlove, a master aviation mechanic and cousin of GlacierHub editor Ben Orlove, landing at a nearby diversion airport was impossible, forcing the pilot to resort to an instrument approach to Anchorage. On the day of the crash, weather near Anchorage was severe, with dense fog and swirling snow obscuring visibility. military service members aboard the flight never made it to Elmendorf. Nicknamed “ Old Shaky” for its tendency to vibrate during flight, the enormous Douglas C-124 Globemaster II departed from McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington early on November 22, 1952. A Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, the same model plane that crashed into Mount Gannett in 1952, flies over San Francisco Bay. ![]() The PvM combat was pretty anticlimactic-a big reason everyone ended up out in the wilderness doing PvP instead. In Old School RuneScape, there wasn’t a whole lot as far as boss battle goes. RuneScape 3 includes a wide range of different bosses at the end of various quests, and rewards can range from stronger weapons to powerful armor upgrades and more. Boss battles in Old School RuneScape were both not that exciting and also not very rewarding. In RuneScape 3, they’ve dramatically improved boss battles. Not everyone is bothered by older graphics though, but this is certainly considered to be a positive by most. There isn’t a lot to say here, but if you’ve played both versions (or really, if you just pay attention to when the games were released), you know that RuneScape 3’s graphics are significantly better. It’s nice to do simple tasks while listening to the music from “back in the day.” Likely, it has become a type of peaceful, mindless activity for many, considering the amount of grinding that goes into the game. If you ask someone “why do you like old school RuneScape,” this is always guaranteed to be one of their first answers. Related: RuneScape Reveals "Once Upon A Time" Year-Long Miniquest Series Reasons Why Old School RuneScape Is BetterĪs with any franchise that includes older games, Old School RuneScape’s success comes largely from the nostalgia of the players. There are certainly different benefits to both versions. Whether that’s actually the case or not is up for debate among RuneScape fans. Years later, we have RuneScape 3, which is supposedly the new and improved version of the game. The second I hear the music playing in that game, it takes me straight back to the days when I’d do countless rune essence runs and stand in the grand exchange trying to sell stuff to other players. I was one of the many who used to spend hours upon hours on my laptop, grinding my skills up to level 99 in Old School RuneScape. ![]() The cleanser liquifies on the skin to dissolve makeup without scrubbing, she says.
